Food Is Not Just Food… And That’s Okay
For a long time, I tried to treat food like it was purely functional. Fuel in, fuel out. Stick to the plan. Avoid the “bad” stuff. Keep everything under control.
But over time, that mindset drained the joy out of eating. It made food feel stressful, guilt-ridden, even isolating. I told myself it’s just food, so why did I feel so anxious around it?
And then one day, I had a gelato on a warm evening during a walk with friends. We were laughing, wandering through the park, fully in the moment. That gelato? It wasn’t “just food.” It was connection. It was joy. It was nostalgia. It was rest.
That’s when it clicked:
Food is rarely ever just food.
It’s how we celebrate.
It’s how we connect.
It’s how we care for ourselves and for others.
It’s how we create memories.
It’s culture, comfort, and sometimes even healing.
And that doesn’t make it “bad.” It makes it human.
Understanding this was a huge part of healing my relationship with food.
Because it helped me let go of the pressure to eat “perfectly” all the time.
It helped me stop viewing every bite through a lens of judgment.
It helped me tune into how food made me feel, not just how it looked on a nutrition label.
Yes, food nourishes the body, but as I always say, it nourishes the soul.
And when we allow it to hold both roles without shame, we begin to eat in a way that’s more balanced, more joyful, and more sustainable.
So the next time you enjoy a slice of cake at a birthday party or share a snack during a road trip or say yes to dessert after dinner, remind yourself:
It’s not just about the calories or the ingredients.
It’s about the moment. The connection. The experience.
And there’s nothing wrong with that.
If you’re on a journey to make peace with food, this perspective is everything. And if you need a little support in getting there, my Feel Good Approach Guide is here to help you rebuild your relationship with food — with compassion, joy, and freedom at the center.
Because you deserve to feel good in your body and at the table
